The company has established SBTi-validated climate targets, aiming to reduce its CO₂ emissions by 63% by 2035. From 2026 onwards, approximately 60% of its natural gas requirements will be covered by biomethane.
Montecchio Maggiore (VI), June 25, 2026 – FIS, one of the leading companies in Europe and worldwide in the development and production of “small molecule” APIs (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients) for the global pharmaceutical industry, is accelerating its industrial decarbonization journey through a series of initiatives aimed at reducing emissions associated with its manufacturing activities and strengthening the sustainability of its energy model.
As part of this strategy, FIS has developed a comprehensive climate transition plan validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the leading international reference framework for setting decarbonization targets aligned with the latest scientific evidence. The initiative is grounded in the global ambition to limit the rise in average global temperature to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, in line with scientific consensus.
Specifically, FIS has committed to reducing its emissions in absolute terms by 63% by 2035, addressing both emissions generated by its manufacturing operations (Scope 1) and those associated with purchased energy consumption (Scope 2). This target will be supported by energy efficiency initiatives, the increasing use of renewable energy sources and the adoption of innovative technologies to decarbonize industrial processes.
FIS has also established a specific supplier engagement target, encouraging the adoption of climate commitments aligned with SBTi standards across its value chain (Scope 3). This measure contributes to the progressive reduction of indirect emissions while enhancing the overall sustainability of the supply chain. As part of its broader ESG strategy, the company also leverages the EcoVadis rating system to monitor the environmental and social performance of its suppliers. FIS’s commitment to sustainability has been recognized with the EcoVadis Platinum Medal, the highest distinction awarded by the organization.
Among the key initiatives already underway are long-term agreements signed with companies active in the development and production of biomethane, including Veolia, BMH and Tages. These agreements will enable FIS to use up to 9.1 million standard cubic metres (Smc) of renewable gas per year, equivalent to approximately 60% of the Company’s total natural gas requirements, avoiding around 18,500 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually associated with the use of fossil gas.
For a company operating in an energy-intensive sector such as pharmaceutical manufacturing, biomethane represents a key lever for combining industrial competitiveness with environmental sustainability. Beyond supporting the decarbonization of production processes, this renewable energy source helps reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and exposure to volatility in international energy markets, while strengthening the energy supply security.
